The boy goes out to the road and a woman embraces him. Later she talks to him about God, and he tries to pray but finds it easier to talk to his father instead. The woman accepts this as another way of talking to God. The book ends with a description of the brook trout that once lived in the mountain streams. Throughout the whole novel the man struggles with right and wrong, and to me this theme is the most important one of the whole book. In such an evil post-apocalyptic world the boy constantly needs to be reminded that they are still good’ whereas the man puts their survival ahead of being the good guys.
The man starts to think that death is near and he finds himself sobbing sometimes at night. He realizes he isn’t crying about death but about “beauty or goodness,” things he hasn’t thought about in a long time. He dreams that the boy is dead and he wakes up in terror, but the boy is fine. They search through charred, empty houses and find nothing. The Road Summary. The Road opens after some unknown apocalyptic event has struck. The first few pages of the novel situate us in the landscape: ash, isolation, and a long road to travel. You could say the novel alternates between two settings: the road and excursions away from the road into houses or other possible food mother lodes.
